Taiwan Reports Increased Chinese Military Activity Following US Arms Sale

Taiwan’s defense ministry reported on Sunday that Chinese warplanes and warships have conducted a “combat patrol” near the island. This action comes in response to a $2 billion arms sale package approved by the United States, which Beijing has vehemently opposed.

US Commitment to Taiwan’s Defense

Despite lacking formal diplomatic relations, the United States is legally required to provide Taiwan—an island claimed by China—the means to defend itself. On Friday, the Pentagon announced the approval of the arms sale, which includes an advanced air defense missile system that has been tested in conflict zones, notably Ukraine.

Details of the Chinese Military Patrol

According to Taiwan’s defense ministry, 19 Chinese military aircraft, including Su-30 fighter jets, participated in a “joint combat readiness patrol” around Taiwan on Sunday morning. These aircraft operated across various airspace sectors, including the north, center, southwest, and east of the island. Taiwanese forces were deployed to monitor the situation and ensure national security.

China Condemns US Arms Sales

Although China regularly conducts military exercises around Taiwan, this marked the first patrol since a series of extensive war games held by Beijing earlier this month. In a statement issued late Saturday, China’s foreign ministry condemned the recent U.S. arms sales, urging Washington to cease its military support for Taiwan and stop actions perceived as threatening peace in the Taiwan Strait. The ministry asserted that China would take “resolute countermeasures” to safeguard its national sovereignty, security, and territorial integrity, though specific actions were not detailed.

Taiwan’s Stance on National Defense

In recent years, China has increased its military presence around Taiwan, which continues to reject Beijing’s claims of sovereignty. Taiwan’s government has welcomed the arms sale as essential for national defense, marking it as the 17th such deal under the Biden administration. In response to the arms package, Taiwan’s foreign ministry emphasized, “In the face of China’s threats, Taiwan is duty-bound to protect its homeland and will continue to demonstrate its determination to defend itself.”
