Pakistan successfully launched its second communication satellite, PAKSAT MM1, on Thursday, aimed at boosting the nation’s internet and communication infrastructure.
The Pakistan Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (Suparco) announced the satellite’s launch from China’s Xichang Satellite Launch Centre. This follows the launch of Pakistan’s first satellite earlier this month as part of China’s Chang’e-6 lunar mission from Hainan.
According to a statement from state-run broadcaster Pakistan Television, PAKSAT MM1 will provide improved internet services across Pakistan, enhance television broadcasts, cellular phone services, and broadband connections. The satellite is expected to start providing these services by August.
Planning Minister Ahsan Iqbal, who attended the launch, expressed optimism about Pakistan’s future capabilities, saying, “The day is not far when we will launch our satellites on our own rockets from Pakistan’s Space Launch Centre. Congratulations, Pakistan.”
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif also congratulated the nation, expressing hope that the satellite would deliver “the fastest internet facility” across the country. He highlighted the significant impact of PAKSAT MM1 on internet connectivity, expecting it to revolutionize Pakistan’s digital landscape.
In his statement, the Prime Minister celebrated the launch as a significant step forward in Pakistan’s space and communication capabilities. He emphasized the satellite’s role in enhancing citizens’ lives, promoting economic activities, e-commerce, and e-governance.
He also noted that the successful launch from the Xichang Satellite Launch Centre underscores the strong collaboration and partnership between Pakistan and China. “It is through such cooperative endeavours that we can propel our nation forward and harness the power of technology for the benefit of our people,” he said.
PAKSAT MM1’s positioning in a geostationary orbit 36,000 kilometres above Earth is a remarkable achievement, showcasing Pakistan’s scientific and technological capabilities. PM Shehbaz praised Suparco and everyone involved in the mission, calling their collective efforts a testament to Pakistan’s potential and the promising future ahead.
“May the launch of PAKSAT MM1 be the harbinger of even greater successes in our quest for excellence in space and communication technology,” he added.
