Heavy Rainfall Strikes Sindh
On August 19, 2024, torrential rains battered Sindh, particularly Larkana, Qambar-Shahdadkot, Sukkur, Jacobabad, Shikarpur, Ghotki, and Kandhkot-Kashmore districts. Continuous downpours over the past two days have led to severe flooding, disrupting utilities and leaving many residents confined to their homes.
Impact on Infrastructure and Utilities
The relentless rain, which measured up to 290mm in Sukkur, has led to extensive damage, including prolonged power outages, sewage overflow, and significant disruptions to telecommunications. Local authorities struggled to manage the flooding, with municipal dewatering efforts failing due to inadequate equipment.
Damage to Historic Site and Health Services
The ancient site of Mohenjo Daro experienced rainwater accumulation and structural damage, with fissures developing in the main stupa. Immediate repairs are underway. Additionally, Chandka Medical College Teaching Hospital faced severe disruptions, including power outages and flooding that hindered medical services.
Casualties and Damage
The heavy rains resulted in several fatalities and injuries. In Larkana, five individuals lost their lives due to roof collapses and electrocution. Additionally, flooding caused the collapse of homes and significant damage to public infrastructure. Many areas remain without electricity and are experiencing a shortage of drinking water.
Efforts and Expectations
Sukkur Mayor Barrister Arsalan Islam Sheikh reported that 80% of Sukkur had been cleared of rainwater, with ongoing efforts to restore normalcy. However, the situation remains critical, with more moderate rains expected in Shaheed Benazirabad, Naushahro Feroze, and Sanghar districts. Villagers have begun evacuating to safer areas as water levels rise in the Indus River and its tributaries.
