“Retirement in Italy: U.S. Couple’s Journey to a More Affordable Lifestyle”

A Life-Changing Decision

Tony Smarrelli, 74, and his wife Francine, 75, made a significant lifestyle change by relocating from the U.S. to Italy in December 2023. After celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary in Venice, they decided to pursue a dream of living in Italy, reconnecting with their Italian roots.

Affordable Housing in Scalea

The couple purchased a three-bedroom home in Scalea, Calabria, for €150,000 (approximately $162,000), a cost they deemed almost impossible to afford in the U.S. “A similar home in Southern California would easily cost $1 to $2 million,” Tony remarked. They secured their visas quickly, sold their U.S. home, and made the move within a few months.

Significant Cost Savings

Before leaving the U.S., the Smarrellis had monthly expenses ranging from $4,800 to $5,000. Now, they enjoy a cost-effective lifestyle in Italy, saving nearly $3,000 a month. “Our monthly costs here are around $1,200 for both of us,” Tony explained, which includes dining out, utilities, and other essentials.

Renovation and Adaptation

Although their new home was livable, the couple opted for extensive renovations, investing an additional €80,000 (about $86,500) to upgrade the plumbing, electrical systems, and overall aesthetics of the property. The renovations were completed in four months with the help of a reputable architect and construction team.

Quality of Life in Italy

The Smarrellis were drawn to Scalea for its stunning sea views, vibrant culture, and relaxed lifestyle. They appreciate the affordability of dining out and other leisure activities compared to their previous life in the U.S. “Restaurants are much cheaper here,” Tony noted, adding that their total monthly dining expenses amount to $400 to $500.

Conclusion: A New Chapter

The couple’s move to Italy not only fulfilled their dream of connecting with their heritage but also provided a more affordable and enjoyable lifestyle. Tony and Francine Smarrelli exemplify how relocating abroad can lead to substantial savings and a richer quality of life for retirees.
